In the third episode of TNT’s The Great Escape, three teams of two are blindfolded and taken to a 165-year-old mental institution in Ione, Calif. The teams have their blindfolds removed and are visibly frightened by the gothic asylum. To win $100,000, each team must overcome their fears and make it out of the institution. After host Rich Eisen explains the rules, the teams are escorted to the detainment zone, and the escape is on.
The Blue Team, an engaged couple named Deja and Michael, is the first to find the map and escape the detainment zone. To enter stage one, each team must break through a fortified door and rappel down the side of the building using a sheet rope. Not only do they have to overcome these physical challenges, but they must also avoid patrolling guards along the way. The Blue Team enters stage one with the Red Team on their tail.
The Red Team, a married couple named Rick and Lori Ann, who are both U.S. Navy veterans, experience a major scare in rappelling down the sheet rope. They make it through safely, but to their dismay, a guard catches them. This is bad news for the couple, as they are afraid of meeting the sheet rope again.
The fearless Green Team, consisting of childhood friends Martin and Eric, bolts through the building in an attempt to enter stage one. In their hasty attempt to catch up, they completely forget about the guards and are caught. These two best friends quickly realize that The Great Escape isn’t all about brawn.
All three teams complete stage one and advance to stage two, with the Blue Team in the lead, followed by Red Team and the Green Team. Michael and Deja of the Red Team have serious difficulty with the challenge in stage two. While they struggle, the Red Team passes them. Deja and Michael are clearly doing something wrong, as the Green Team proceeds to pass them, as well.
Stage three, a test of mental stability and patience, proves challenging for all three teams. The Red Team maintains their lead by entering stage four first. While hiding from guards, Lori Ann tells her husband that there is no way she is going to rappel down the rope again, so they better not get caught. Despite her prayers, guards spot them once more. As the Red Team heads back to detainment, the Green Team completes stage three.
Things heat up as the Red Team and the Green Team fight for the lead. At this point in the escape, the Blue Team has essentially given up. The young couple is completely demoralized and cannot figure out how to complete stage three.
The Red Team finishes stage four and heads to the transport zone, victory at their fingertips. But the challenge is not over yet. To win, they must tell the driver where to go using their Great Escape key. The Green Team finishes stage four and races to the transport zone. Both teams have trouble assembling their keys. The Red Team is first to the punch, and the driver pulls out, taking them to the colonial house where Rich Eisen awaits. Upon arriving , Rick and Lori Ann of the Red Team hand over their key, winning this week’s episode of The Great Escape and $100,000.
